Aman Kumar

Software Engineer — I build the payment and transaction systems that can't go down.

Four years at Tata Consultancy Services engineering backend services for Travelport, a global travel-tech platform used by 70,000+ agencies. My services clear 500K+ transactions a day across 15 GDS integrations at 99.95% uptime — written in Java 17 and Spring Boot, moved over Kafka and IBM MQ, and shipped on OpenShift and Amazon EKS.

Experience

Four years on one platform, three teams deep.

Same client, increasing scope: from hardening payment APIs, to migrating a legacy document platform, to architecting a new retrieval service. The numbers below are production numbers.

Ticket Repository Team

System Engineer, Java Backend · Tata Consultancy Services · Client: Travelport

Java 17Spring BootMongoDBAWS S3CloudWatchOpenShift
  • Architected a ticket-retrieval microservice serving 200K+ REST requests per day, fetching MongoDB records by PNR and ticket number.
  • Integrated AWS S3 log archival and CloudWatch dashboards for live monitoring, cutting issue-detection time by 60%.
  • Deployed containerised services on OpenShift via GitHub Actions CI/CD, enabling 15+ zero-downtime releases per month.
  • Designed a pluggable response formatter supporting XML, JSON and EDIFACT — accelerating new-client onboarding by 35% and saving ~40 developer-hours per release.

EMD Team · Electronic Miscellaneous Document

System Engineer, Java Backend · Tata Consultancy Services · Client: Travelport

Java 17SpringHibernateApache Camel 3GitHub Actions
  • Migrated the EMD application from Java 8 to Java 17 and Camel 2 to Camel 3, refactoring 40+ Camel routes with zero production regressions.
  • Rebuilt the legacy REST integration layer on the native Java HTTP client — +70% API throughput and roughly $20K/year saved in infrastructure cost.
  • Delivered 12 core EMD features for ancillary products (seats, meals, lounges) across 10+ airline carriers.
  • Unified Payments, PNR, TSR Billing, IATA and airline-system integrations through Apache Camel routes, improving cross-system reliability by 35%.
  • Shipped production hotfixes under 4-hour SLAs, sustaining 99.9% availability on revenue-critical EMD services.

Payments Team

System Engineer, Java Backend · Tata Consultancy Services · Client: Travelport

Java 17Spring BootIBM DB2IBM MQApache TomEE 9JenkinsDocker
  • Led the migration of payment microservices from Java 8 to Java 17 and TomEE 8 to TomEE 9 — +50% throughput, −30% memory.
  • Developed payment REST APIs processing 500K+ daily transactions across 15 GDS integrations at 99.95% uptime, with zero customer-impacting outages in 2024.
  • Cut average API latency by 40% (850ms → 510ms) through DB2 query tuning, connection pooling and caching.
  • Implemented OAuth 2.0 and JWT authentication with Spring Security across payment endpoints, with Fortify static analysis gating delivery in CI.
  • Authored JUnit and Mockito suites raising test coverage from 33% to 70%, ahead of 25+ zero-downtime releases.
  • Resolved 30+ critical production incidents as on-call engineer, improving MTTR by 45% through structured root-cause analysis and runbooks.
  • Mentored 5 junior developers and ran 100+ code reviews, lifting the SonarQube quality score by 25% across the payments codebase.

What the platform actually looks like.

A simplified view of the Travelport payment and document platform I work on — the request path in gold, event and message flow in teal, persistence in grey. Every box below is something I have shipped to, debugged in production, or migrated.

Side work

Things I built to learn the next layer down.

Both started as questions I couldn't answer from the day job — how orchestration really behaves, and what retrieval does to an internal knowledge base.

Infrastructure

Containerised microservice on Amazon EKS

Containerised a Spring Boot REST service with Docker and provisioned an Amazon EKS cluster to run it. Configured Deployments, Services and ConfigMaps for scaling and configuration management, then worked through pod scheduling, rolling updates and cluster troubleshooting with kubectl until failures stopped being mysterious.

Knowledge retrieval tool for Confluence & Jira

Built a RAG-based retrieval tool over Confluence pages and Jira tickets with hybrid search, ticket-status lookup and severity-based prioritisation — cutting the manual search time teams spent hunting for the one runbook or the one closed ticket that already had the answer.
